Accessibility
A Social Sustainability Indicator.
Brief Description: This identifies accessibility as being represented by how close a service is located to the local population: in relation to time and distance. This is an indicator which can be readily determined by a desk exercise.
Relevance to sustainability: Providing facilities that are within walking / cycling distance and / or with good public transport links can reduce the need for relatively high carbon emission car transport. The numbers of a population within a certain radius will also be required as this data will be used to assist in providing a well-balanced service.
Unit of Measure:
Percentage (and number) of the local population within a defined radius:
• time category (% within a defined 'average' walking distance: 15-minute walk; 30-minute walk etc.)
• distance category (% within a defined distance - range would be given, e.g. up to 1km; 1.01 - 2 km etc -mile) of the service / facility.
